Liposculpture & Liposuction Sydney

Liposuction, also called liposculpture, is a procedure that removes stubborn pockets of fat to refine the shape of the body. Excess fat is removed through very small incisions using a fine, blunt-ended instrument called a cannula, allowing specific areas to be contoured.
It is designed for shaping rather than weight loss. Liposculpture works best on localised fat deposits that have not responded to diet and exercise, rather than as a way to lose a large amount of weight. It is not a treatment for obesity or a substitute for a healthy lifestyle.

Liposculpture is commonly used to refine areas such as the:

  • Abdomen, waist and hips
  • Thighs, buttocks and knees
  • Arms, neck and chin

What Is Liposculpture?

Liposculpture removes unwanted fat from targeted areas of the body through small incisions, using a cannula to gently draw the fat away and refine the contour. At Verve the tumescent technique is commonly used: a solution containing local anaesthetic and other agents is introduced into the fatty layer first, which makes the fat easier to remove and helps reduce bruising. Other approaches, including laser-assisted and micro-liposculpture, may also be options depending on the area, and the most suitable technique for you is discussed at your consultation.

Am I a Suitable Candidate?

There is no strict age or weight limit for liposculpture, but the people who tend to be happiest are within around ten to fourteen kilograms of their ideal weight, at a stable weight, in good general health, and have realistic expectations. It suits localised fat that has not shifted with diet and exercise. It is not a treatment for obesity and not an alternative to dieting, and part of the consultation is making sure it is the right option for you.

Anaesthetic, the Procedure and Your Consultation

Liposculpture can often be carried out under local anaesthetic, sometimes with sedation, and the tumescent technique in particular can allow the procedure to be done without a general anaesthetic. Where your procedure would take place, the technique used and the type of anaesthetic are all explained at your consultation, along with a written quote covering the procedure, theatre and garment costs. As with all cosmetic surgery, a referral and a cooling-off period apply, giving you time to consider your decision.

Recovery and Downtime

Most people are encouraged to walk soon after the procedure and are back at work within a few days, though you should avoid strenuous activity for around a month and wear a compression garment for about two weeks. Bruising and swelling are normal and usually settle within about three weeks, although some swelling can linger for a few months. The final contour generally becomes clear after around three months as the area settles.

Risks and Things to Consider

Liposculpture is surgery, and although serious complications are uncommon, it carries risks that need to be understood. These can include bruising, swelling, bleeding, temporary numbness or altered sensation, discomfort, infection, contour irregularities or asymmetry, and the possibility that the result does not fully meet your expectations. The risks relevant to you are discussed thoroughly at your consultation so you can make an informed decision. This information is general and is not a substitute for individual medical advice.

Results

You will usually notice a difference in your shape soon after the procedure, becoming more apparent over the following four to six weeks and settling fully at around three months. Liposculpture works by removing centimetres rather than kilograms. The fat cells removed from an area do not grow back, but remaining fat cells can still enlarge if you gain significant weight, so a stable weight helps keep your result looking its best.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

No. Liposculpture is for refining localised pockets of fat, not for weight loss or obesity, and it is not a substitute for a healthy diet and exercise.
Commonly the abdomen, waist, hips, thighs, buttocks, knees and arms, as well as the neck and chin. Suitable areas for you are confirmed at your consultation.

The incisions are very small, often do not need sutures, tend to close within days and usually fade over the following weeks.

The fat cells removed from an area do not grow back, but the fat cells that remain can still enlarge if you gain significant weight, so keeping a stable weight helps maintain your result.

Serious complications are uncommon, but bruising, swelling, temporary numbness, discomfort and contour irregularities can occur. The full list of risks is discussed with you at your consultation.
