Fat Transfer

Fat transfer at Verve Cosmetic Clinic. Speak with our team about restoring natural volume using your body’s own fat.

Fat Transfer Sydney

Fat transfer, also known as fat grafting, is a procedure that uses your own fat to restore natural volume where it has been lost. Fat is taken from an area where you have a little to spare, prepared, and carefully reintroduced where more fullness is wanted.
It is a natural approach to restoring volume, because the material used comes from your own body. On the face, fat transfer is often used to soften the hollowing and deflation that can come with age, such as sunken temples, hollow cheeks, under-eye hollows and thinning lips.

Fat transfer is often used to restore volume in the:

  • Cheeks and mid-face
  • Temples and under-eye area
  • Chin and lips

What Is Fat Transfer and What Areas Are Treated?

Fat transfer restores lost volume using your own fat rather than an implant or a filler. It is commonly used on the face to address deflation such as sunken temples, hollow cheeks, deep folds, under-eye hollows and thinning lips, and can also add subtle fullness elsewhere. Because it uses your own tissue, the result can look and feel natural as it settles.

How Is the Fat Transfer Procedure Performed?

Fat transfer is done in a few stages. First, a small amount of fat is gently removed from an area such as the abdomen or thighs, using a technique similar to liposuction. The fat is then processed and prepared, before being reintroduced into the target area through fine injections, building the volume gradually and evenly. The approach and the amount transferred are planned around your features and goals, and the details, including the type of anaesthetic used, are explained at your consultation.

Am I a Suitable Candidate for Fat Grafting?

Fat transfer can suit people who have lost facial volume and would like a natural way to restore it, and who have a little fat elsewhere that can be used. As with any procedure, good general health and realistic expectations matter. Some of the transferred fat is naturally reabsorbed by the body, so more than one session is sometimes needed to reach the desired result, and this is discussed openly at your consultation.

Recovery and Downtime

Recovery depends on how much work is done and the areas involved. You can expect some swelling and bruising, both where the fat was taken and where it was placed, which settles over the following days to weeks. Most people take a short period of downtime and are given clear aftercare advice to follow.

Risks and Things to Consider

Fat transfer is a surgical procedure and carries risks that should be weighed carefully. These can include bleeding, infection, bruising and swelling, asymmetry or lumpiness, changes in sensation, and the fact that some of the transferred fat is reabsorbed, which can affect the final result and may mean a further procedure. The risks relevant to you, and how the procedure would be performed, are explained fully at your consultation. This information is general and is not a substitute for individual medical advice.

Results

Because fat transfer uses your own tissue, results can look natural once any swelling has settled and the fat that remains has established itself, usually over several weeks. Some reabsorption is normal, so the final volume is a little less than immediately after the procedure. Results vary from person to person, and realistic expectations are an important part of being happy with the outcome.

The fat that survives and establishes itself can be long-lasting, but some reabsorption is normal and ageing continues over time, so results vary from person to person.
