Acne Treatments Sydney

Acne is a medical skin problem that usually begins in the early teenage years and can last until the 30s and even 40s. Of course, if you have acne or even if you are left with scarring once it has cleared up, it can affect your confidence and how you feel about your appearance.

There are various ways to approach acne, depending on the severity and type of acne. The causes of acne are multi-factorial and different for each person, and therefore the treatments used vary from person to person.

At Verve, we treat acne with the aim to control symptoms by:

  • Preventing new spots from forming
  • Improving those already present
  • Preventing scarring

What Causes Acne?

Acne is caused by overactivity of the sebaceous glands that secrete oily substances onto your skin. Acne is common in teenagers because of excessive hormone production of androgens during puberty. These hormones make the oil glands produce more sebum and also clog the pores of your skin. It can also occur as a result of hormonal changes during pregnancy or when birth control pills are started or stopped. In addition, heredity may also play a role, where it runs in families. The use of certain drugs containing lithium and oily cream can lead to acne. In women, acne frequently worsens at the time of menstruation.

What Are The Different Types Of Acne?

Acne can appear on the skin in many ways and this will depend on the individual. This can include congested pores, whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, pustules and cysts, which are deep pimples and boils.

What Acne Treatments are Available?

There are a range of different treatment methods available that will be determined after your initial consultation based on the type and severity of your acne.

Possible treatment options can include:

  • At-home skin care regime specifically formulated to target acne,
  • Chemical peels.
  • Healite (Blue Light) Therapy.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Acne can be treated in every skin type, but the right approach differs considerably from one person to the next. Your skin type, how sensitive your skin is, the type of acne you have and how severe it is all change what we would recommend. Deeper skin tones need particular care, because inflammation and some treatments can leave dark marks behind that take months to fade. Very sensitive or reactive skin usually needs a gentler starting point. This is assessed in person before anything is recommended.
Yes, in most cases. Choose products labelled non-comedogenic or oil-free so they are less likely to block pores, and remove makeup properly at the end of the day rather than sleeping in it. After some treatments, including chemical peels, you will be asked to leave the skin bare for a set period while it settles, and your skin may be more sensitive than usual for a few days afterwards. You are given specific aftercare advice for whichever treatment you have.
No referral is needed to book a consultation with us. If you have already seen a GP or another practitioner about your acne, it helps to bring details of what you have tried and how your skin responded, because that shapes what we suggest next. Where your acne would be better managed by another practitioner, our doctor will tell you and can arrange a referral.
Your first appointment is mostly about understanding your skin rather than treating it. Our doctor will ask about how long the acne has been there, where it appears, what you have already tried, your general health and any medications you take, and for women whether it changes through your cycle. Your skin is then examined to establish the type and severity, and whether there is any scarring. From there you will be told what is driving your acne, what the realistic options are, what each involves and what it costs. Some options can only be discussed in person rather than described on a website, which is a requirement of Australian advertising law and applies to every clinic. You are under no obligation to start treatment on the day.

Good day-to-day habits make a real difference to how well any treatment works.
Wash with a gentle cleanser twice a day. Scrubbing harder irritates the skin and tends to make breakouts worse rather than better.

  • Avoid picking or squeezing. It is the single biggest cause of scarring and dark marks.
  • Look for non-comedogenic or oil-free moisturisers, sunscreens and makeup.
  • Wear sunscreen daily. Sun exposure darkens the marks left behind by breakouts and some acne treatments make skin more sensitive to light.
  • Introduce one new product at a time so you can tell what is helping and what is not.
  • Give it time. Most acne treatments take six to twelve weeks before the effect is clear, and skin can look worse before it improves.
  • Wash pillowcases regularly and keep hands, phones and hair off your face.

If your acne is painful, leaving marks or scars, or not responding to what you are using at home, have it assessed rather than waiting it out.
