Rosacea is a chronic condition that mainly affects the central face — the cheeks, nose, chin and forehead. It often begins as a tendency to flush or blush easily, and over time can develop into more persistent redness, visible blood vessels, and in some cases small red bumps or a burning, stinging sensation.
The exact cause isn’t fully understood, but it’s thought to involve a mix of genetics, an overactive response in the skin’s blood vessels, and the immune system. Redness can also occur on its own, without rosacea, from sensitive skin, sun damage or broken capillaries.
