Sclerotherapy for Spider & Varicose Veins in Sydney

Sclerotherapy is a treatment for unwanted veins on the surface of the skin. A fine needle is used to inject a sclerosing solution into the vein, which causes it to collapse and fade over time. Your body then gradually absorbs the treated vein, while the surrounding healthy veins are left to do their job.

It is most often used on the legs to treat spider veins, known medically as telangiectasia, and smaller varicose veins. As well as their appearance, these veins can bring symptoms such as aching, burning and swelling, and sclerotherapy can help with both.

Sclerotherapy is often used to help with:

  • Spider veins (telangiectasia)
  • Smaller varicose veins
  • Aching, burning or swelling in the legs

How Does Sclerotherapy Work?

Sclerotherapy works by injecting a sclerosing solution directly into the targeted vein. The solution irritates the vein wall so that the vein collapses and seals shut. Over the following weeks, the treated vein fades and is gradually absorbed by your body, and blood naturally reroutes through healthier veins nearby. Because only the treated veins are affected, the surrounding circulation is not disturbed.

What Happens During Sclerotherapy?

Your appointment starts with an assessment of your veins to plan the treatment and confirm sclerotherapy is the right option. The targeted veins are then injected one at a time using a very fine needle. The number of veins treated and the time this takes will vary from person to person. Many people need more than one session to reach the result they are after, as the veins fade gradually, and we will map out a realistic plan with you.

Side Effects and Downtime

Sclerotherapy is generally well tolerated, but some temporary effects are normal. You may notice bruising, redness, small raised bumps or mild stinging around the injection sites, which usually settle over the following days to weeks. You can normally return to your day straight away, though we often recommend wearing compression stockings for a period and keeping active with gentle walking, while avoiding strenuous exercise, hot baths and direct sun for a short time. The treated veins continue to fade over several weeks.

Who Is Sclerotherapy Suitable For?

Sclerotherapy suits many people wanting to reduce the appearance of spider veins or smaller varicose veins, or to ease symptoms like aching and heaviness in the legs. It is not right for everyone: pregnancy, some medical conditions and certain medications can make it unsuitable, and larger varicose veins may need a different approach. Dr Nasser will assess your veins at your consultation and let you know whether sclerotherapy is the best option for you.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Spider veins, or telangiectasia, are small, fine veins that sit close to the surface of the skin, often red, blue or purple. They commonly appear on the legs and, while usually harmless, many people choose to treat them for cosmetic reasons.

Varicose veins are larger, swollen veins that can bulge above the surface of the skin, most often on the legs. Alongside their appearance, they can bring symptoms such as aching, burning or swelling.
Sclerotherapy is a common treatment for spider veins and smaller varicose veins, where a sclerosing solution is injected to fade the vein over time. Larger varicose veins can sometimes need a different approach, which is why we assess your veins first. Dr Nasser will talk you through the options suited to your situation.
After treatment you may be advised to wear compression stockings for a period and to keep moving with gentle walking. We generally suggest avoiding strenuous exercise, hot baths and direct sun for a short time while the treated veins settle. You will be given clear aftercare instructions on the day.
Some people benefit from more than one session to reach the result they are after, as treated veins fade gradually over the following weeks. We will let you know what to expect for your veins and whether a follow-up is likely at your consultation.
