Common Skin Concerns

Hair Loss

Hair loss and thinning are common for both men and women, and can have a range of causes. Understanding what’s behind it is the first step, and some types of hair loss can be helped with treatment.

What Causes Hair Loss

Hair naturally goes through cycles of growth and shedding, but a number of things can tip the balance towards thinning or loss. The most common cause is a hereditary tendency, often called male or female pattern hair loss, which leads to gradual thinning over time. Hormonal changes, stress, illness, nutrition and some medical conditions can also play a part.

Because the causes are so varied, it helps to have hair loss assessed rather than guessed at. Identifying what’s driving it is what makes it possible to know whether, and how, it can be treated
Hair loss can be influenced by:

  • Genetics and family history
  • Hormonal changes
  • Stress, illness or major life events
  • Nutrition and some medical conditions

Types of Hair Loss

  • Pattern hair loss: The most common type — a hereditary, gradual thinning known as male or female pattern hair loss.
  • Telogen effluvium: Temporary, more widespread shedding, often triggered by stress, illness, childbirth or a major change.
  • Hormonal hair loss: Thinning linked to hormonal changes or imbalances.
  • Other causes: Hair loss related to medical conditions, nutrition or other factors, which is why assessment matters.

How to Treat Hair Loss

The right approach depends entirely on what’s causing your hair loss, so it starts with an assessment. Some types of hair loss respond well to treatment while others are better managed in other ways, and our doctor will talk you through what’s realistic for your situation.
