Common Skin Concerns

Vascular Concerns

Vascular concerns are visible blood vessels and redness in the skin, such as facial capillaries, spider veins and small red spots. They are common and usually harmless, and their appearance can often be reduced with treatment.

What Causes Vascular Concerns

Vascular concerns are blood vessels that become visible at or near the surface of the skin. They include fine facial capillaries (telangiectasia), spider veins, diffuse redness, and small raised red spots such as cherry angiomas. They most often appear on the face, but can occur elsewhere on the body.

These vessels can become more visible with age, sun exposure and genetics, and are sometimes associated with conditions like rosacea. While they are usually harmless, many people choose to have them treated because of how they look.
Visible vessels and redness can be influenced by:

  • Sun exposure and skin ageing
  • Genetics and skin type
  • Rosacea and sensitive skin
  • Hormonal changes and, for leg veins, pressure on the veins

Types of Vascular Concerns

  • Facial capillaries (telangiectasia): Fine, thread-like vessels visible near the surface, often around the nose and cheeks.
  • Spider veins: Clusters of small vessels that spread out in a web-like pattern, on the face or legs.
  • Diffuse redness: Generalised redness across an area of skin, sometimes linked to rosacea.
  • Cherry angiomas: Small, raised red spots made up of blood vessels, which become more common with age.

How to Treat Vascular Concerns

The right treatment depends on the type of vessel, where it is and how deep it sits. We assess your skin at your consultation and recommend the most suitable approach for your concern.
