Common Skin Concerns

Pigmentation / Melasma

Pigmentation is patchy darkening of the skin caused by excess melanin, from sun spots and age spots to melasma. While some pigmentation can be stubborn, the right treatment can often lighten and even out the skin tone.

What Causes Pigmentation and Melasma

Pigmentation happens when the skin produces too much melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour, leading to darker patches or spots. It shows up in different ways, from small sun spots and freckles to larger patches of melasma across the cheeks, forehead and upper lip.

Melasma in particular is often linked to hormones, which is why it commonly appears during pregnancy or with hormonal changes, and it can be made worse by sun. Because pigmentation is closely tied to sun and, for melasma, hormones, it can be persistent and can return, so ongoing sun protection is an important part of managing it.
Pigmentation is commonly influenced by:

  • Sun exposure over time
  • Hormonal changes, particularly with melasma
  • Skin injury or inflammation, including after acne
  • Genetics and skin type

Types of Pigmentation

  • Sun spots (solar lentigines): Flat brown spots from cumulative sun exposure, often on the face, hands and chest.
  • Melasma: Larger, symmetrical patches, usually on the cheeks, forehead and upper lip, often linked to hormones and worsened by sun.
  • Post-inflammatory pigmentation: Darkening left behind after inflammation or injury to the skin, such as after a breakout.
  • Freckles: Small pigmented spots that tend to darken with sun exposure.

How to Treat Pigmentation and Melasma

The right treatment depends on the type of pigmentation, how deep it sits and what’s driving it, which is why we assess your skin carefully first. Because sun and, for melasma, hormones can cause pigmentation to return, daily sun protection is always part of the approach we plan with you.
