Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty

The eyes are the window to the soul, but they are also unfortunately one of the first areas of the body to show the signs of ageing. As we age, the thin skin surrounding our eyelids begins to droop and wrinkle, leading to a tired appearance. While topical treatments such as anti-ageing creams can help to improve the appearance of the skin around the eyes, surgery is a much better option for drastic rejuvenation of eye appearance.

More and more people are opting for the low-risk, efficient blepharoplasty procedure to achieve a naturally youthful look without drastically altering the structure of the face. Blepharoplasty is becoming increasingly popular for men because of its ability to make patients look dramatically younger and healthier without looking like they have had surgery. Many career men are choosing blepharoplasty for a subtle yet sculpted appearance, rather than a total transformation.

At Verve, we tailor the surgery for each individual patient, taking into account their unique facial properties and their desired outcome. The amount of skin that is removed will vary as will the decision to remove fat or inject fillers to increase volume. The procedure is also performed quite differently for men and women due to their different anatomical properties and ideal appearance. For example, while a total removal of lines and wrinkles under the eyes is usually preferred by women, for men it is often advisable to leave some fine lines around the eyes to maintain a natural, dignified appearance. Some patients will require only upper or lower blepharoplasty, while others will opt for both.

Those who have excess skin and fat on the upper eyelid often choose upper blepharoplasty. This is because the excess skin forms a heavy looking eyelid which can create a tired, aged appearance and even obstruct vision. Upper Blepharoplasty involves making an incision along the natural eyelid crease, to allow the removal of excess fat and skin. The skin is then stitched back together along the eyelid crease to disguise scars. The end result is a more youthful, refreshed appearance. The procedure can also serve a medical purpose for patients who have skin which hangs beneath the eyelid margin and obscures vision.

Those who choose lower Blepharoplasty want to improve the shape of the lower eyelid and remove wrinkles. Droopiness and sagging can occur as the thin skin around the eyelid ages, and repositioning the skin can correct this. Dermal fillers can be added to improve a hollowed appearance. Lower Blepharoplasty rejuvenates the lower eyelid through fat excision, skin repositioning, laser resurfacing, or a combination of the three. In cases where volume is depleted, volume is added with fillers. The technique used at Verve to remove fat or reposition the lid involves using a hidden incision inside the lid which creates a natural result while also preserving the function of the orbicularis muscle in the lower eyelid. Laser resurfacing can be used to reduce lines and wrinkles beneath the eyes and restore a youthful appearance.
